To Boston with Love....

We are joining the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild to honor the people of Boston with a tribute to peace and love.  When tragedies occur, quilters and crafters rally together and use creativity to comfort and heal those in need. There have been Quilts for Japan, Pillowcases for Newtown, and many other examples of the love and generosity of our community. Now as we watch the events in Boston unfold, again we are putting our hands together to do something for those affected. “To Boston With Love” is a collaborative effort of makers to bring peace and love from far and wide. What we’re planning is a public exhibition of flags strung into banners that will be displayed in Boston – hopefully by early June 2013. Details are still being ironed out, and given the mayhem it may be a couple of weeks before we finalize the exact location and date. In the meantime we need to get going on flag making!

Here is the link for the To Boston With Love collaboration with the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild:

The link has all the instructions and even a tutorial!  If you have any questions please email Shannon Page.
All flags are due at the May 2013 meeting!

Scrap-Busting Color Workshop March 2, 2013

Scrap-Busting Color Workshop
Taught by Jessica Sloan, Owner of Remnants: fiber [culture] in Austin, TX

Dallas Modern Quilt Guild is hosting a workshop on Saturday, March 3rd in the Magnolia Room at Plano Presbyterian Hospital. The workshop will be a study in color, composition, and improvisation. We will be piecing improvisational quilts that tell a color story. The objective of the workshop is to be able to make a scrappy, yet cohesive quilt made out of varying sized pieces of scraps, but for it to be stylish and well-composed. Each piece is thoughtfully placed. Price for the workshop is $25. Space is limited, so email Robin Williamson (RobinWmson@gmail.com) with your reservation.

From Jessica: “This exercise works best when one has a significant amount of scraps in the same "color family"; however, it is imperative that the scraps/group of fabric have value and contrast. You can also use 15-20 fat quarters; it is best to divide the fats into 3 to 5 color groups that compliment each other. Example: If I'm using 20 fat quarters, 4 might be coral, 4 might be plum, 4 raspberry, 4 mustard and 4 might be cocoa, to break up the “pink-ness” of the first 3 colors. This exercise also works best if you use prints of varying scales, and limited solids. [Solids] are ok to use, but in small quantities (like a little strip here or there).

“We'll be intuitively cutting the fabric to make best use of the scale of each print… I am confident that this will be a great experience for the guild, and a great way to use up those little strippies and chunks that we couldn't bare to toss but are taking up space or stuffed into scrap bins, suffocated by other little scrap rejects. Tell those little fabric jewels that it is their time to shine!”

Jessica Sloan started quilting as a teen, and now owns and operates a 4,000-square-foot fabric and longarm shop, Remnants: fiber [culture]. At her shop she specializes in designer quilting and fashion fabric, affordable edge-to-edge longarm services, and a devotion to the lifelong learning and cultivating of fiber arts thru classes, tutorials, show and tell, and monthly meet ups. She’s a member of the San Antonio Modern Quilt Guild.

February Old Block/New Block challenge

Hi all!

As January's meeting was so busy I wanted everyone to have the guidelines for this month's activity Old Block/New Block.  I'm really looking forward to seeing what we all come up with.
The activity is:
Take any traditional block and put a modern spin on it!  Some suggestions are making it wonky, adding negative space, using solids, changing size/scale etc. If you don't have time to sew a block together feel free to draw one (or more).
We strive to promote modern quilting and this is a great way to help define what that means and how we can update older ideas.
Feel free to email me with any questions!

Modern Quilts of Texas Exhibit at the Dallas Quilt Celebration 2013

We are pleased to announce a great opportunity for Dallas Modern Quilt Guild members!
Dallas Quilt Celebration 2013, sponsored by the Quilters Guild of Dallas, is one of the largest quilt shows in the county.  Every year the show features Special Exhibits and for the 2013 show, part of Special Exhibits will include an Open Exhibit of modern quilts representing the various Modern Quilt Guilds throughout Texas.  Titled, Modern Quilts of Texas, our goal is to showcase quilts from members of the various Modern Quilt Guilds across Texas to bring recognition to the incredible workmanship and creativity that exists throughout our Modern Quilt Guilds.

I encourage everyone to consider entering this exhibit - we do amazing work, ladies, and we should show it off!  In addition, we have the opportunity to staff the Special Exhibits area and promote the DMQG to all of the show attendees, as well as provide "white glove" services for attendees who want to see the quilt backs (you KNOW you want to wear the white gloves!!).  All volunteeres will receive free entry to the show the day they volunteer, a "thank you" gift for volunteering 4 or more hours and participation in the largest "all volunteer" quilt show in the country.  We'll have sign up sheets at our January and February meetings (there are lots of volunteer opportunities available throughout the show - Cathy can advise if you're interested).
