QuiltCon and the MQG QuiltCon Block Challenge

Have you heard about QuiltCon? QuiltCon is the inaugural conference and show of the Modern Quilt Guild. It will take place in Austin, Texas (yay, us!) from February 21st – 24th, 2013. Some of the biggest names in modern quilting will be leading workshops and lectures. For details on lodging, location, etc., please see the MQG website.

A few important dates to keep in mind:
  • Conference registration opens August 30th, 2012
  • Quilt Show entries will be accepted between July 1st, 2012 and October 31st, 2012
As a way to promote QuiltCon, the MQG is hosting a block challenge. They would like you to use the colors from their logo to make a modern block that represents your own style. See their website for details:

Just a reminder, our monthly meeting is tonight at Christus Conference Center.  Christus is located at 6363 N State Highway 161 #450 in Irving. {We will resume our monthly meetings next month at our usual location, Bernina of Dallas}. Finger foods and desserts will be provided, so bring your appetite! We'll also have three different stations for paper piecing demonstrations.

If you are participating in the round robin bee, please remember your pink bags with your first finished border. If you are unable to make the meeting, please arrange for drop off and pickup with your nest mates.

Community Outreach Annoucements

CALL for:

1.       Your completed Wonky Cross Blocks.  Yes, we are still accepting your wonky cross blocks! But, you may want to stop making new ones, because we are moving onto a new project – quilt packets (more on that below).
Laurie Thompson has pieced together a quilt top using some of your submissions, and it looks really great:

We are about to begin piecing together another wonky cross quilt, and are in the process of procuring batting and backing fabrics to finish them up.

So, if you have some wonky cross blocks that you’ve completed, turn ‘em in and we’ll make them a part of a funky, fun quilt.  THANK YOU!

2.       Fabric.  We will be accepting fabric donations on an ongoing basis, so if you have fat-quarter size or larger pieces of fabric that you would like to donate, bring them to our next general meeting.   Also, we are seeking larger pieces that can be used for backing.
3.      Hobbs Batting UPC Labels.  If you use Hobbs batting, please save your UPC labels turn into Lovetta Ferrante.  We can use these to purchase discounted batting from Hobbs.

PICK UP Fabric Packets.  Using your generous fabric donations, the CPI Committee has put together A LOT of quilt packets, just waiting for you to plan and cut and sew and make some quilt tops for some of our local charities.

There’s some gorgeous, fun, colorful fabrics - including some great pre-cuts - in these packets -- so grab a packet or two at the next DMQG monthly meeting and have some fun while knowing that what you’re doing will make a positive impact on our community.

Future Partnerships with Local Charitable Organizations.  The CPI Committee will be targeting smaller charitable organizations as future recipients of our quilts.  At this time, we have one partner, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, and will be donating some quilts to them this year.  We will be taking your recommendations and will vote on additional charitable partners later this spring.

As always, thank you ladies, you’re an amazing and generous group.   We look forward to seeing you at the next general meeting or Saturday Sew!

Lovetta, April, Gina, Laurie, Maureen & Tammy
